A dog is going to be a part of your family for many years, up to 20.
That means if you buy a puppy for your eight year old child, you must take into consideration that the dog could well be still in your family when the child is a young adult.
Before you get a dog, do some research on the breed. This dog could (and should) take up several hours each day in your life.
Just the basics, feeding, exercising and grooming for instance - that’s about an hour, do you have an hour at least every day to devote to your new friend?
